Inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, this installation piece depicts imagery found from Chinese Communist propaganda on minority peoples in China contraposed with Tibetan portraits of young nuns and monks who were imprisoned and tortured for speaking out against Chinese domination and oppression.

These photos are from Tibetan Realities, installation pieces Shever produced for two shows in Sapporo during spring/summer 2008. In both pieces imagery taken from Chinese ideological propaganda is printed on one side of the material. On the oppositie side, are prints of Shever's Tibetan portraits, those who suffered greatly, generating a paradox. On one side, the intangible collective fantasy that casts an illusion tricking and disinforming minds; on the other side piercing through, more tangible reality - as found in the displaced, oppressed, the tortured individual human being. The facts are seen by the discerning eye, when the lighting is just right. In the past, the Chinese government placed the image of Chairman Mao Tse Tung in the center of the sun's rays; in recent times it has been the communist symbol.
